Pollen At their heart, adventure games are about providing a narrative. They are mechanically simple. At their most complex, they feature puzzles that give the player some agency in the world, and slow their progression so they don't just blast through the narrative content. This means that in order to be successful, adventure games need to perform accurately on the few attributes that they offer. There isn't anywhere for developers to hide weakness or inexperience. Pollen Download for PCPollen tells the story of an unnamed protagonist who has been sent to Saturn's moon, Titan, to investigate a corporate-controlled research investigation studying so-called "The Entity". The game opens with you sitting in a dark room at a retro-futuristic computer terminal. A robotic voice asks you to answer a series of personality test questions, with each answer leading another series of pips to a computer-generated punch card. The scene quickly streamlined the company, Rama Industries, so big and powerful enough to ask utterly unreasonable things from its employees, the requests dressed up as gifts or favors to the "lucky" employees.

The introduction then drives into the interior of a lander craft on approach to Titan. Over the intercom comes the voice of a Rama Industries representative from HQ reciting a well thought out game detailing the mission. Her tone artificially jovial, at odds with the dangerous activity of intoxication on the floor. After a successful landing, go to a nearby comms array to make contact with the ground team, who seem surprised at their arrival. As they begin to explain why, the Rama representative's voice returns, drowning out the details with alien mission parameters. Immediately you are taught that something is wrong on Titan, and this ominous obfuscation of details makes you aware that Rama would prefer to remain in the dark. Pollen's atmospheric introduction sets the tone nicely for the rest of the game, but what follows falls short of his example. From there you will be asked to explore the research base, investigate and uncover what is really going on. All expositions are delivered via audio logs, cassette tapes throughout the environment. Audio logs are a tired expository method made even more frustrating in this case by forcing the player to stand still next to stationary tape players in order to hear them.

Their tone artificially jovial, at odds with the perilous activity of hurtling toward the ground. After a successful landing, you head to a nearby comms array in order to make contact with the ground team, who seem surprised by the arrival. As they begin to explain why, the Rama rep's voice returns, drowning out the details with extraneous mission parameters.
