While Valve's productions are light and humorous, the title of Croteam presents a serious, thought-provoking story that will be remembered for a long time. The adventure begins in a maze of ruins. We don't know who we are or what we're doing here. We are greeted by a mysterious voice from heaven who presents itself as Elohim, the Hebrew creator god. It tells about the trials ahead and the symbols we must collect in order to uncover the secrets of a strange place.
The destination is not clear at first, so we have no choice but to solve puzzles prepared by Elohim and collect characters similar to Tetris blocks. We quickly realize that the world we explore is not what it seems. As computer terminals with news, calls and reports from a group known as IAN begin to appear on our way, the story slowly begins to make sense. The Talos Principle from the very first minutes asks quite serious questions related to consciousness, soul or even humanity. Traveling through successive - created by a voice from heaven - temples, we discover notes presenting various points of view on these issues, and by talking to a computer assistant, we can present our own opinion. Although the game presents us with a total of several dozen puzzles, it is the discussions that make us want to move forward.
The first puzzles are quite simple and usually require placing something heavy on a button, avoiding the mines patrolling the area or disabling the sentry gun. After a quiet introduction, however, the creators quickly force us to strain the gray cells. The key to solving many puzzles is to use the available tools in a not entirely obvious way. For example, a prism used to guide the laser beam can add additional weight to the button. The problems gradually become more and more difficult, but the biggest challenges are reserved for people willing to complete the game one hundred percent. The stars hidden in subsequent worlds can often be unlocked if we smuggle in tools enclosed in several puzzles or if we carry a laser of the appropriate color from one puzzle to another. In most difficult tasks, we can look for hints, although we must first reach the Messengers who offer them.
