It is not worth choosing words. The Witcher 3 is a masterpiece, and in many ways simply the best and most fascinating game of recent years. It captivates with its artistic vision, captivates with a huge world, and absorbs with a story. The creators are not looking for cheap applause. Their design is uncompromising and consistent. Thoughtful and refined. The action takes place shortly after the events of the second installment. Nilfgaard has conquered Temeria and is about to launch an attack on the rest of the North. Geralt and Vesemir scour the field of the recent battle, hitting the traces of the sorceress Yennefer. The witchers then go to the nearby village of White Orchard to learn more.
It is quite an elaborate form of a prologue. We find ourselves in a vast, closed land at the beginning, where we can move freely. We slowly get used to the world, perform our first tasks, learn about the various aspects of the game and fight our first fights. As things gain momentum, we learn that Ciri appeared in nearby Velen - the daughter of the Emperor of Nilfgaard who had great power, and at the same time the legendary Child of Surprise, strongly associated with Geralt's destiny. We have to find her, but the young woman is also followed by ghostly riders known as the Wild Hunt.
This is how we get to Velen, and from there the routes across the North stretch to the horizon. As far as the eye can see, there is an enormous world to explore. The first glance at the map is astonishing. A large space with outlined outlines of villages, settlements and cities - among them the illustrious Oxenfurt and the Novigrad agglomeration. All of this is rightly awe-inspiring to the adventure ahead. The main plot is therefore the search for Ciri and we know from the very beginning that her tracks lead from Velen, through the mentioned Novigrad, to the frosty Skellige. These are three clues that we can explore in any order, but the lack of proper preparation of Geralt for the journey suggests that starting activities in Velen.
