Key takeaways

  • Best overall setup: High preset, Lumen Hardware RT off, Global Illumination Medium, Shadows Medium, Reflections Low or Medium, upscaler Quality, Motion Blur off.
  • Best value tweak: Turning Lumen Hardware RT off. PCOptimizedSettings measured hardware Lumen at 20 to 25 percent slower than the software path.
  • Best for high-end GPUs: Lumen Hardware RT on with Ultra global illumination, DLSS Quality or Balanced and frame generation.
  • Best for 8GB cards: Texture Quality Medium, Lumen Hardware RT off, upscaler Balanced.
  • Biggest mistake to avoid: Changing graphics settings while in a save. Apply them from the main menu and restart, or some options will not take effect properly.

The best Oblivion Remastered PC settings for most players are the High preset with Lumen Hardware RT turned off, Global Illumination on Low or Medium, Shadow Quality on Medium or High, and DLSS, FSR or XeSS on Quality. Lumen is the biggest performance cost in the game, and upscaling is the biggest single gain after it. No settings combination fully removes the open-world traversal stutter, so the realistic goal is a steady frame rate in cities and dungeons with fewer hitches outdoors, not a perfectly flat frame-time graph.

Why Oblivion Remastered runs the way it does

Oblivion Remastered, released in April 2025, is an unusual hybrid. Bethesda and Virtuos kept the original game’s logic underneath and placed a new Unreal Engine 5 renderer on top, complete with Lumen global illumination, Nanite-style geometry and virtual shadow maps. That gives the remaster its dramatic lighting, but it also means two engines have to cooperate every time you cross a world cell boundary.

Digital Foundry’s PC analysis was titled “Impressive Remastering, Dire Performance Problems.” Its reviewer found stutter commonplace and reported that even a Ryzen 7 9800X3D could not deliver smooth traversal outdoors. Dropping every option to the minimum raised CPU-limited performance by only around 10 percent on average, with a very slight improvement in stutter and a large visual downgrade. Digital Foundry also pointed out that the 2006 original hitched every time a new world grid loaded, so some of the problem is inherited.

When the game is GPU-limited, though, it behaves more predictably. PCOptimizedSettings describes it as largely GPU-bound, and DSOGaming found Radeon cards perform unusually well, with the RX 7900 XTX landing close to the RTX 5080. At native 4K Ultra, DSOGaming measured the RTX 4090 at roughly 41 to 47 FPS and the RTX 5090 at roughly 55 to 59 FPS. Hardware Times recorded up to 13GB of VRAM use at 4K Ultra.

Patch status in October 2026

The most recent PC update remains Update 1.2, which went live on July 16, 2025. Bethesda’s notes listed frame rate fixes in specific areas such as Deepscorn Hollow, Black Rock Caverns and the road between Skingrad and Skingrad Castle, reduced hitch frequency in the open world, and broader frame-time work on water rendering, weather, character attachments and animation. Player reception was mixed: Notebookcheck reported complaints of more frame drops and crashes in cities after the update.

When the Nintendo Switch 2 version launched on August 11, 2026, Bethesda said it was looking into bringing that version’s optimizations to other platforms, and TheGamer reported the studio later confirmed those improvements would come to other platforms without a date. Until that patch arrives, the settings below reflect the current PC build. If a new PC update lands, re-check your presets, because Lumen and shadow changes would shift the recommendations.

Every graphics setting explained

The Graphics menu uses Low, Medium, High and Ultra steps for most options. Here is what each one costs, based mainly on PCOptimizedSettings’ RTX 4090 measurements at 4K, where differences show up most clearly.

Setting Measured cost What it changes Recommended
Lumen Hardware RT 20 to 25% slower when on Hardware ray-traced lighting and reflections Off unless high-end
Shadow Quality Up to 20% at Ultra vs Low Virtual shadow map resolution Medium or High
Effects Quality Up to 10% Materials, particles, blending Medium or High
Foliage Quality 7 to 8% gain at Low Grass density and pop-in High
Reflection Quality About 5% software, about 8% with hardware RT Water and surface reflections Low or Medium
Global Illumination 3 to 5% variance (software Lumen) Indirect light bounce quality Medium or High
Post Processing 2 to 4% Bloom, blur, tonemapping Low or Medium
View Distance Minimal Distant detail High
Hair Quality Negligible Hair rendering High
Cloth Quality Negligible on modern CPUs Cloth physics High
Texture Quality None until VRAM runs out Texture resolution Match to VRAM
Upscaling (Quality mode) About 60% faster (DLSS Quality) Internal render resolution Quality
Upscaling (Performance mode) About 97% faster (DLSS Performance) Internal render resolution 4K only

Lumen Hardware RT

This toggle switches Lumen from its software path to hardware ray tracing. The visual gain is real, with more accurate reflections and better-grounded indirect lighting, but PCOptimizedSettings measured a 20 to 25 percent cost. It also found that hardware Lumen on Ultra is only around 3 percent slower than on Low, which means that once you accept the hardware RT cost, there is little reason to choose its lowest setting. Deltia’s Gaming advises at least 8GB of VRAM if you plan to enable it.

The catch: Hardware RT lifts CPU load as well, and Hardware Times found faster GPUs ran into a CPU limit around 90 FPS at 1080p with it enabled.

Global Illumination

With software Lumen, Global Illumination steps cost relatively little, and PCOptimizedSettings found minimal visual gain above High. Many guides suggest Low for maximum frame rate, but Medium is the better visual balance on mid-range cards because interiors look noticeably flatter on Low.

Shadow Quality

Shadows use Unreal’s virtual shadow maps, which are expensive at the top end. Ultra costs up to 20 percent compared with Low per PCOptimizedSettings. Medium keeps character and building shadows stable; High is the sweet spot for stronger cards.

Reflections and Screen Space Reflections

Reflection Quality is cheap with software Lumen, but several guides recommend Low because the water in the Imperial City and Bravil is where frame rate dips. If you see shimmering on water, that is usually the software Lumen reflection path rather than a bug.

Texture Quality

Texture Quality does not cost frame rate until your card runs out of memory, then it causes heavy hitching. PCOptimizedSettings and other guides suggest Low or Medium on 8GB cards, High on 10 to 12GB and Ultra only on cards with more than 12GB, especially at 1440p and 4K given the 13GB peak Hardware Times recorded.

Upscaling and Frame Generation

The game supports DLSS, FSR and XeSS along with frame generation. PCOptimizedSettings measured DLSS Quality at about 60 percent faster than native and Performance at about 97 percent faster at 4K, while frame generation added 60 to 80 percent at 4K. Use frame generation only when your base frame rate is at least around 60 FPS; several guides warn it amplifies the feel of traversal stutter from a low base. If DLSS causes shimmer on foliage, lower the in-game sharpening, as Steam community users recommend.

Entry-level cards

Hardware Times measured the RTX 3060 at barely 40 FPS at 1080p with software Lumen and Quality upscaling, with 1 percent lows under 30 FPS. PCOptimizedSettings recorded similar results: about 40 FPS on the RTX 3060 and about 54.5 FPS on the RTX 4060 Ti at 1080p with Quality upscaling. That means entry cards need Balanced upscaling and the Medium-heavy profile above to approach 60 FPS. Bethesda lists a GTX 1070 Ti or RX 5700 class card in its minimum specifications and an RTX 2080 or RX 6800 XT for the recommended 60 FPS experience.

Reasons to pick this profile: It prioritises stable frame times in cities, where the game is heaviest.

Reasons to skip it: If you want the remaster’s lighting at its best, an entry GPU simply cannot carry hardware Lumen at playable frame rates.

The catch: HotHardware found 8GB Radeon cards ran out of VRAM badly at 1440p High, so 8GB owners should stay at 1080p or lower textures.

Mid-range cards

PCOptimizedSettings measured the RTX 4070 at about 76 FPS and the RTX 4070 Ti at about 90 FPS at 1080p with Quality upscaling and software Lumen. At 1440p those cards land comfortably around 60 FPS with the profile above. Because DSOGaming found Radeon cards perform strongly here, the RX 7800 XT and RX 9070 can often hold one setting higher than their usual GeForce rivals.

Reasons to pick this profile: It keeps most of the remaster’s visual upgrade at 1440p.

Reasons to skip it: Players who prefer hardware Lumen should accept frame generation and a lower base frame rate.

The catch: Cities like the Imperial City Market District can still dip into the 50s, so a frame cap at 60 often feels better than an uncapped 70 to 90.

High-end cards

Compusemble’s footage, reported by PC Guide, showed an RTX 5090 with a 9800X3D at about 60 FPS outdoors at native 4K with hardware Lumen, and averages of 85 FPS at 1440p and 107 FPS at 1080p maxed out. Bethesda itself suggested an RTX 4090 class card for full 4K Ultra, according to TweakTown. With DLSS Quality and frame generation, RTX 4080 Super and RTX 5080 owners can run hardware Lumen at 4K comfortably.

Reasons to pick this profile: Hardware Lumen is the definitive way to see the remaster.

Reasons to skip it: Competitive frame rates are not the point of this game, but if you hate latency, software Lumen with no frame generation feels snappier.

The catch: Even flagship hardware does not eliminate traversal stutter, as Digital Foundry demonstrated.

Reducing stutter: what works and what does not

You cannot eliminate Oblivion Remastered’s open-world hitching with settings alone, but you can reduce how often and how badly it happens.

  1. Change settings from the main menu. A widely shared Reddit guide, reported by TweakTown, says changing settings mid-session can leave the game in a worse state. Apply from the main menu, then restart.
  2. Turn off Lumen Hardware RT and use Low software Lumen if hitching is severe; the same guide recommends it as the first step.
  3. Allow shader compilation after driver updates. A popular Steam community guide notes that every GPU driver update invalidates the game’s shader cache, causing heavy CPU use and stutter while shaders rebuild in the background. Let the game sit at the menu for a few minutes.
  4. Install on an NVMe SSD and keep plenty of free space for the shader cache.
  5. Lower Texture Quality if hitching appears when entering new areas, which points to VRAM pressure.
  6. Cap your frame rate slightly below your monitor’s refresh rate to smooth frame pacing with G-Sync or FreeSync.
  7. Reset the AMD shader cache in Adrenalin if stutter persists after an update on Radeon cards.

Engine.ini tweaks

Community guides point to the Engine.ini file inside the game’s Saved\Config\Windows folder; the exact parent folder differs between the Steam and Game Pass versions. FPSCalculator’s guide suggests a few lines under a [SystemSettings] heading:

  • r.Lumen.TranslucencyReflections.FrontLayer.EnableForProject=0 disables costly Lumen reflections on water and glass while keeping software Lumen.
  • r.Shadow.RadiusThreshold=0.05 stops tiny objects from casting shadows, which the guide says recovers a few frames in busy towns.
  • r.Streaming.PoolSize=2048 sets the texture streaming pool; raise it to 4096 on cards with 12GB or more.

PCOptimizedSettings also notes that disabling virtual shadows via a console command recovers around 5 to 6 percent. The “Ultimate Engine Tweaks” file on Nexus Mods bundles many similar changes. Back up the original Engine.ini first, and remove the tweaks before reporting bugs to Bethesda. Digital Foundry has argued the core traversal stutter is an engine issue that users cannot fully fix, so treat these as improvements, not cures.

Common mistakes

  • Benchmarking indoors. Dungeons and Oblivion gates behave differently from the overworld. Test on the road out of the Imperial City and in a busy market district.
  • Running Ultra textures on 8GB cards. It looks great until VRAM fills, then hitching gets worse.
  • Using frame generation from 40 FPS. It makes stutter feel more pronounced, not less.
  • Selecting hardware Lumen on Low. It saves only about 3 percent compared with Ultra, so you pay nearly the full cost for less quality.
  • Blaming settings for city drops after Update 1.2. Some of those drops are patch-related, according to player reports collected by Notebookcheck.

Steam Deck and handheld notes

Oblivion Remastered is Steam Deck Verified, according to PC Gamer’s coverage of the system requirements. On handhelds, use the Low preset with FSR or XeSS on Balanced or Performance, Lumen Hardware RT off, and a 30 or 40 FPS cap for consistent frame pacing. The same logic applies to other portable PCs: frame-time stability matters more than peak frame rate.

How we compared

We compared these settings using Bethesda’s published requirements and patch notes, the in-game menu, and independent measurements from Digital Foundry, PCOptimizedSettings, DSOGaming, Hardware Times, HotHardware, Notebookcheck and Compusemble as reported by PC Guide, plus owner reports from Steam and Reddit. We did not bench-test these settings ourselves. Most performance figures date from 2025, before any future 2026 PC optimization patch.
