“AI laptop” has become a marketing staple, but Dell’s current lineup actually backs the label with meaningful hardware: neural processing units, Copilot+ certification, and enough memory to run on-device assistants without constant cloud round-trips. For professionals who want AI features baked into everyday workflows rather than bolted on, Dell’s Pro and Inspiron families are a sensible starting point.
In this review we look across the range, from the premium Dell Pro 16 Premium with a next-gen Ultra 5 to the Copilot+ certified Dell 16 Plus with an Intel Core Ultra 9, plus several AI-branded Inspiron touchscreen configurations. The aim is to separate genuine AI capability from spec-sheet buzzwords so you buy the right tool.

Design & Build
Dell’s build quality scales with the tier. The Dell Pro 16 Premium and Dell 16 Plus sit at the top, offering larger 16-inch panels, sturdy chassis, and premium touches like Wi-Fi 7 and backlit keyboards aimed at professional workstation duty. The Dell Pro 15 business laptop trims to a more portable 15-inch footprint with a 120Hz FHD display and all-day battery focus. The Inspiron touchscreen models bring a friendlier consumer design with FHD IPS touch panels, positioning themselves as flexible home-and-office machines rather than pure workstations.
Performance
The AI story lives in the silicon. The Dell 16 Plus with its Intel Core Ultra 9 and 32GB LPDDR5X is the clear leader here, a true Copilot+ PC with on-device AI acceleration and Wi-Fi 7 for demanding multitasking. The Dell Pro 16 Premium’s next-gen Ultra 5 and the Pro 15’s Core i7-1355U handle heavy office loads, virtualization, and light creative work with ease. The Inspiron units, built around 10-core Intel i5 chips with 16GB RAM, are capable everyday performers that lean on AI Copilot features but won’t match the flagship’s neural throughput. For serious local AI experimentation, the 32GB Ultra 9 model is the one to target.
Pros & Cons
- Genuine Copilot+ hardware: the Ultra 9 model delivers real on-device AI acceleration.
- Strong memory options: up to 32GB LPDDR5X for smooth multitasking.
- Wide range: from portable Pro 15 to premium 16-inch workstations.
- Business-friendly features: Wi-Fi 7, backlit keyboards, and all-day battery on higher tiers.
- Inspiron AI is lighter: the i5 models lean on software Copilot more than a dedicated NPU.
- Storage configs vary: some Inspirons split storage between SSD and external drives.
- Premium pricing at the top: the Ultra 9 model commands a workstation-class price.
Alternatives to Consider
If your AI ambitions extend to training or running large local models, a laptop with a discrete RTX GPU will outpace any integrated NPU here. For users who simply want a reliable productivity machine and don’t care about the AI branding, a standard business ultrabook may offer better value. And if portability trumps everything, lighter 14-inch competitors could suit better than Dell’s 16-inch flagships.
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a laptop a “Copilot+ PC”?
Copilot+ certification requires a capable NPU (typically 40+ TOPS), sufficient RAM, and storage to run Windows’ on-device AI features. The Dell 16 Plus with the Core Ultra 9 qualifies.
Do I need 32GB of RAM for AI tasks?
For light AI features, 16GB suffices. If you plan to run local models or heavy multitasking alongside AI assistants, the 32GB configuration is worth the upgrade.
Are the Inspiron AI laptops real AI machines?
They support Windows Copilot and AI software features, but their AI acceleration is more modest than the Ultra 9 Pro-series. They’re better described as capable everyday laptops with AI conveniences.
Is Wi-Fi 7 worth it?
If you have a compatible router, Wi-Fi 7 offers lower latency and higher throughput, which helps with cloud AI and large file transfers. It’s a nice-to-have, not essential.
Verdict
For genuine AI capability, the Dell 16 Plus with the Core Ultra 9 and 32GB LPDDR5X is the standout, delivering true Copilot+ performance and future-ready connectivity. The Dell Pro 16 Premium is the balanced professional pick, and the Inspiron touchscreens serve everyday users who want AI conveniences without the flagship price. Decide whether you need real on-device acceleration or just AI-assisted productivity, and Dell has a fitting option either way.
