The plot of God of War Ragnarok is set several years after the events presented in the previous installment of the series. The titular Ragnarok, a great battle between the Norse gods and giants, which is to lead to the end of the world, is fast approaching. This is evidenced by the fact that the preceding Great Winter (Fimbulwinter) has already reached Midgard. In order to avoid the inevitable tragedy that subsequent confrontations with the Aesir will undoubtedly bring them, Kratos wants to keep Atreus safe at all costs.

However, the son of a Spartan warrior in God of War Ragnarok is consumed by curiosity about his identity, as well as what role he will play in the upcoming events. The heroes face another adventure full of hardships, during which they will have to make choices that determine not only their fate, but also the future of all nine worlds. There are both previously inaccessible lands waiting to be visited, i.e. Vanaheim, inhabited by the Vans, Svartalfheim, which is the home of the dwarves, as well as Asgard, which is the seat of the Aces of Asgard, as well as new places in the already visited worlds: Alfheim, Muspelheim, Helheim, Niflheim, Jotunheim and Midgard.

God of War Ragnarok offers a combat system known from the previous installment of the series, which, however, has received a number of improvements and new elements. During the clashes, we have to carefully observe the movements of the enemies, dodge in time and perform quick counterattacks. We eliminate enemies by making use of the protagonist's iconic Blades of Chaos, as well as an ax called Leviathan. In God of War Ragnarok, both weapons allow you to perform special attacks that are characteristic of them, and the damage dealt by them can be additionally enhanced with fire or ice magic, which allows you to ignite or freeze opponents. Both Blades of Chaos and Leviathan can also be used by Kratos outside of combat.

Especially in God of War Ragnarok, they come in handy when solving complex environmental puzzles. For example - this first murder weapon is used, among others, to one for dismantling boilers full of boiling water that we come across in Svartalfheim, and the other for freezing the geysers there. What's more, with the Blades you can grab the edges, which makes it easier to get to high ledges of rock, and throw the ax to be able to summon it to yourself, just like Thor does with Mjolnir.

In addition, God of War Ragnarok features two new types of shields compared to the previous game in the series. Some allow for dynamic defense and unarmed counterattacks, while others provide powerful cover and are able to accumulate kinetic energy from opponents' blows, which can be released periodically by hitting the ground, causing devastating shockwaves. In God of War Ragnarok, we also use the help of Atreus, who actively supports us. The boy shoots the bow again on cue, and he has gained new abilities - he can, for example, collapse various constructions on his opponents.

What's more, in God of War Ragnarok it can be extremely useful also outside of duels. He is even able to operate various devices, while Kratos deals with something completely different. As the game progresses, we develop both heroes and improve their weapons and armor, which over time allows us to face increasingly stronger opponents. Their hosts are very diverse - they consist of both regular opponents, acting as "cannon fodder", and overgrown monsters straight from Norse mythology. Since Kratos has a hard time with the Aces, he is also followed by much more powerful opponents, led by the revengeful goddess Freya and the aforementioned Thor.
